Are You a Role Model?
by Elizabeth Ruske

Has anyone ever told you that you were their “role model”? If so, what did they say about you? Take a moment and think about that! (I’m pausing here for you to think!)
If no one has ever told you this . . . that’s ok . . . let’s imagine it is happening right now. Imagine that I am telling you, “you are my role model”. What would you love to hear being said about you? (I’ll pause here for you to think about this!)
The thing I love most about this exercise is that it forces me to think about the impact I have and would like to have in my life. By thinking about what others are saying about me and more importantly – “what I would like them to say about me”, it helps me clarify how I want to live my life, and what I want to be known for. In our Tiara programs this month, we are exploring “clarity”; what you want in your life and who you want to be in your life.
I just came from a funeral of my Aunt Joan. The service was packed with family and friends (a lot of family – this woman had 11 children, 34 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren). Throughout the service the priest kept saying, “she was a woman who lived a joyous life . . . she lived a full life”. That’s a lovely thing to be recognized for as a role model.
As I sat there I thought, what would I like the priest to say about me? And, as I hugged my mother (one of my strongest and best role models), I declared, I would like someone to say, “… Beth loved with her whole heart . . . her family and friends always knew they could count on her love . . . no matter what!”
So, what’s your answer? What can you declare that you would love to be recognized for . . . starting today?
