Loving Who You Are

by Amy Riley
November 4, 2010

Loving who I am. This often, unfortunately, proves to be challenging. I know there are a lot of redeeming qualities about me, yet I find it difficult in the course of a day to stay present to these. Instead, I’m much more likely to compare myself to others and notice how I fall short. And I’m especially nasty about this. When I’m thinking about how I’m doing at business development, I think about and compare myself to the best top notch business developers I know. And then when I’m thinking about how I’m doing as a Mom, I compare myself to the most naturally nurturing mom I know. And so on…

I don’t naturally (or even often) acknowledge what I’m able to accomplish in every area of my life. And even that is a sort of pitfall. I don’t want to value myself by what I do. Ideally, I want to acknowledge and love who I am and how I am. I don’t want to allow myself to feel accomplished and smart and like a great project manager when and only when the project is completed successfully. Regardless of what happens with that project, I actually know that I AM those things. I am smart and a great project manager!

Too often we are 1) comparing ourselves to others and only noticing the deficiencies. And, if we’re able to get past that we might 2) still be evaluating ourselves by tasks completed or the things that we do. The opportunity is to acknowledge and love who we are, regardless of what’s going on: regardless of what others around us are doing, regardless of what we’re able to accomplish or complete.

Let’s practice that. Say to yourself, “I lOVE that I am _________! and fill in that blank. And don’t limit yourself! You can fill that single blank in with many, many flattering adjectives!

Here’s what I’m loving about myself right now. I LOVE that I am engaging, funny, nurturing and organized.

How well do you love who you are? Complete the statement for yourself: I LOVE that I am _________! Let us know what you love about you!

Amy, great practical reminder! I love that I AM able to make others feel at ease – no matter how I feel. I love that I AM feeling fit and healthy. I love that my visions are becoming a reality for my businesses. I love that I have attracted fantastic business partners around the world. I love that I am willing to be out there — on the skinny branches — living life without a net – A LOT!

    thanks, Beth.

  2. I love that I am… Wow, I keep thinking of things I DO! … Take two. I love that I *am* thoughtful, creative, organized, and silly.

Great reminder that loving yourself isn’t about what you do, but who you are being. I love that I’m being confident, fun, light-spirited, and energized regardless of my circumstances. Thanks again!
