March Madness is upon us . . . .

(Yes I will eventually tie this to the NCAA college basketball tournament  . . .  but bear with me!)

Over the past month we’ve had the pleasure of speaking to several groups of professional women in a wide variety of industries.  It is really wonderful and powerful to see a group of women come together, relax a bit, connect with each other, and think about what they’d like their lives to be like.  As we got deep into the discussion of creating desires for our lives, someone would invariably say  . . . “yes that sounds great in theory, but I can’t control the situation and it is important for me to control things in order to feel good”.

And that is where the madness really starts. The simple truth is we cannot control everything in our lives, and when we try we create a lot of unnecessary stress and pressure.  Yes, that’s the madness.  You just might be the source of your own madness!

We spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about control, attempting to be in control, or figuring out how to regain control.  So our energy around controlling is very strong, but is it productive?  No, it’s not.   Trying to control things you can’t control is madness.

The best advice I can give myself in these times of madness comes right from the basketball court.  I coach teenage girls to play basketball and at the start of the game I tell them, ‘relax – and let the game come to you – don’t force it and when you see the opening – take it’.

So where are you creating your own march madness  . . .  where can you relax and let the game come to you?

Let us know what you come up with  . . . .
