Which one is clearer? 1 … or 2?

I love going to the eye doctor. I have always loved the eye doctor ever since I was 8 years old and my parents discovered I couldn’t see AT ALL. It’s a calm, relaxing environment where problems are handled efficiently. I love sitting in that chair, looking at the fuzzy gray squiggles on the wall, and having them turn into clear, precise letters through a systematic process.
The eye doctor gives clicks through a complicated collection of lenses and simply asks me:
“Which one is clearer? One? [clicking-clicking-clicking] Or two?”
And I just answer. “One.” “Two.” “The same.” “Show me again.”
It’s simple, it’s methodical, it’s soothing. It leads to me being able to see more clearly. And it was an artful accident that I ended up at the eye doctor during Tiara’s month where we are focusing on clarity. I just tore my last contact and needed to go. But while I was sitting there I realized that I could apply this process, mood, and feeling to more complex life decisions. Instead of worrying about making the ABSOLUTE RIGHT life choice, what if I just asked myself … which choice is a little clearer? One… Or two? Three … Or Four?
It might look something like this.
Get married again? Be single forever?
Both are fuzzy.
Be in a relationship? Be single?
Be in a relationship.
Be in a relationship now? Or later?
Both fuzzy.
Be open to a relationship now? Or wait?
Be open now.
Be open to being in a relationship with him? Or look around?
Be open with him.
Relax and see what happens? Figure out long-term answers?
Relax and see what happens.
Anything else?
No. That’s clear.
No anxiety. No drama. No over-analysis. No digging into the past. Just simple options, where I get to choose what’s a little clearer, then what’s a little clearer, then what’s a little clearer … until I feel that innate sense of clarity. We know clarity when we feel it. It might feel like peace, or relief, or inspiration, or energy depending on the situation, and you’ll know.
Try it and let us know what happens!
Ha! I love this as a frame for making choices in life! And, I love it…whenever I say my choice, the doctor always says, “Great!” “Now this one.” I feel like I’m doing perfectly and am ready for the next challenge!
Betsy,
I have returned to this blog multiple times! I love it- thanks for sharing the thought.
