Can you make a fresh start?

As we cycle through our days, months, weeks and years we might start feeling burdened, weighted down and tired from life experience. We seem to have more responsibility and less energy. We have experienced failure. We have witnessed tragedy. After these experiences, is it possible to create a fresh start or new beginning that helps us travel through life lightly, with joy?

Yes, we can feel renewed, refreshed, energized and ready to start again. We can feel joyful and grateful every day. This is possible while we grow wiser with life experience.

To do this we must take care of ourselves. But what does that mean exactly?

Use this diagnostic checklist below to see where you need attention so you can restore your energy, leave oversized baggage behind and create a fresh start that will take off. When you feel low energy, it means that something in one of these categories is out of alignment and needs adjusting to move forward. It’s important you pause and make the adjustment, otherwise you will increase suffering instead of increasing joy and fulfillment.

Spirit: an animating or vital principle held to give life to physical organisms

Rekindle your spirit — Discover what inspires you and gives you purpose. Stoke that fire every day by choosing to focus on this spark by meditating, journaling, walking outside, reading inspirational stories, listening to music or watching videos to remind you of your purpose.

Body: a person’s or animal’s whole physical self

Nourish your body — Allow yourself to be practical and positive in your connection and assessment of your body. Exercise, sleep, drink water and nourish your body in the way that it needs to feel strong, healthy and cherished.

Mind: the complex of elements in an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and especially reasons

Re-train the mind — Notice old patterns of thinking and belief systems that are weighing you down. In the space of awareness, choose and practice ways of thinking and feeling that support your future vision.

Emotions: a conscious mental reaction (as anger or fear) subjectively experienced as strong feeling usually directed toward a specific object and typically accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in the body

Accept and learn from your emotions — When reacting emotionally, pause so you can name and feel that emotion. If necessary, go deeper to understand what past experience or future anxiety caused the reaction. Respond to others from a calmer place that reflects present moment.

Relationships: the way in which two or more people or things are connected

Strengthen or release relationships — Maintain connections with people who are approaching life the same way you are and make you feel good. Notice connections where this isn’t the case and use the methods above to learn and grow. If learning and growing is not possible, and the relationship is keeping an old pattern in place, you are free to lessen your connection to that person.

Commitments: a promise to do or give something

Clear up your commitments — Only commit to what you are inspired to accomplish. Make sure any timeframes promised are reasonable for you. Stay in communication. Release outdated commitments.

Environment: the circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded

Align your environment — Create structures that support your future: home, car, calendar, technology, clothes, exercise classes, grocery delivery. Be creative. Integrate your goals into your physical reality to start making more progress with less effort.
