Our Minutiae is in the Sand

bamboowithstonesI have two bamboo plants in my office that sit on my desk.  Bamboo is an uncomplicated, yet powerful sturdy plant.  These plants are simple, airy, easy to maintain and thriving.  They grow with it’s roots gently submerged in water and rock and will sustain in moderate to low light.   No fancy soil or food.  It’s no wonder bamboo is the poster-plant for a minimalist lifestyle.  But more importantly, my bamboo plants deliver a profound message to me every day.   A daily message  of what’s important, what matters most in my life, along with a reminder to clear the minutia.  I only just recently made this symbolic connection of how and why bamboo plants speak to me the way they do.

Last January, I attended Tiara’s Envision Your Life Workshop. Workshop facilitators and Tiara Program coaches, Ellen and Peg  guided us through a visual demonstration within the realm of conversation on being clear of what we want for ourselves and our lives  that included river rocks and sand.  The river rocks represented every aspect of our lives we hold sacred:  family, health, career satisfaction, spirituality, financial abundance, etc.  Sand in this example represents all the excess baggage, or minutiae, like:  self-doubt, fear, gossip, mis-aligned priorities, drama, or lack of clarity, etc.  All of which ultimately prevent us from having access to the rocks.  The sand is a barrier.

Whether consciously or unconsciously, too often we fill our lives with an innate amount of sand, leaving little room for rocks.  What Ellen and Peg taught me is that I too am Bamboo with access to having exactly the thriving life I desire, so long as I remain well secured with rocks, not sand.
